How to use the Image Converter
- Choose files, drop them on the page, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac).
- Under Convert to, pick JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Each image converts as soon as you add it, and again when you change a setting and select Apply changes.
- Use Compare on any row to check the result against the original.
- Select Download for one image, or Download all (ZIP) for several.
Pick the format by where the image is going
The right output depends on what opens the file next. The Convert to card at the top of the settings has four choices, with a one-line reminder under each.
- JPG is for photos. It opens in almost any app, but it can't store transparency.
- PNG is for graphics and screenshots. It is lossless and keeps transparent areas, so a photo saved as PNG is often much larger.
- WebP is for websites. Files are small, and transparency is kept.
- AVIF makes the smallest files, but only newer apps and browsers open it.
If you aren't sure, choose JPG for a photo you plan to email, print or attach to a form. Choose PNG for a logo or a screenshot. If the result comes out larger than you want, run it through Compress Image and aim for a size such as 100 KB.
What you can open, and what happens to it
This converter reads JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF, BMP and SVG files. A few of them need a little explanation.
- HEIC is the format many iPhones use for photos. It becomes an ordinary JPG here. If that is all you need, the HEIC to JPG page is set up for it and keeps the date and camera info while removing the GPS location.
- Transparent images can't stay transparent in a JPG. When you convert to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with the Background for transparent areas color, which starts as white.
- SVG drawings are turned into pixels. Leave SVG output width empty and you get 2x the drawing's own size. Or type a width up to 4,096 px.
- Animated images become one still picture, so only a single frame is kept.
Files from your camera or phone carry extra information, such as the date, the camera model and sometimes the GPS location. By default the converter removes all of it. Open Advanced settings (optional) if you want to keep the date and camera, or everything.
Change many images, or just one of them
Add as many images as you like and they convert one after another. The settings box says Settings for all images, so whatever you choose there applies to every file in the list.
When one image needs different treatment, select the settings button on its row. That opens settings for that file only, marks it with a Custom settings badge, and applies when you choose Save and apply. It is handy when most of a batch should be JPG but one logo should stay PNG.
Open Advanced settings (optional) to resize while you convert, to set the quality for JPG, WebP and AVIF, or to ask for a maximum file size. Changing something there marks the finished files as out of date until you select Apply changes, so you never download a result that doesn't match your settings.
Need only one common pair? The WebP to JPG and PNG to JPG pages open with the output already chosen. Everything runs on your device, so there's no queue, no upload and no account.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an image to JPG?
Add your image, choose JPG under Convert to, and select Download once it finishes. The conversion happens in your browser as soon as the file is added. If the image has transparent areas, pick the color that should replace them, because JPG can only store solid colors.
Which image format should I use for a website?
WebP is a good default for most website images, because the files are small and it keeps transparency. Use JPG for photos that people will also download or share, and PNG for logos and screenshots where sharp edges matter. Modern browsers all open WebP, but some older apps do not.
Does converting an image lower its quality?
Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF re-compresses the picture, which can remove a little fine detail. PNG output keeps every pixel it is given, but it cannot restore detail an earlier JPG already lost. The quality setting in Advanced settings lets you trade file size against detail.
Why did the transparent background turn white or black?
JPG has no transparency, so the converter fills transparent areas with a solid color, white unless you choose another. If you want to keep the see-through background, convert to PNG, WebP or AVIF instead. Those formats store transparency, so the empty areas stay empty.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. Add all of your images together and they convert in one pass with the same settings. When they finish, Download all (ZIP) saves them as one archive, so you do not have to click through each file. You can give any single image its own settings from its row.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Every image is processed in your browser on your own device and is never uploaded, so nothing is stored or seen by anyone else. The page still works with no account and no signup. Close the tab and the files are gone.
