How to use the JPG to PNG Converter
- Select Choose files, or drop your JPG images on the page. Pasting a screenshot works too.
- For a logo or drawing on a white background, select Remove white background under Make a color transparent. Skip this for plain conversions.
- Look at the file size in each row. If a photo became much larger, a tip offers to convert it to WebP instead.
- Download one PNG from its row, or use Download all (ZIP) for several.
When PNG helps, and when it does not
A PNG is not a better JPG. It is a different tool, and it pays off in particular situations.
PNG helps when:
- You plan to edit the picture again and again. Each time you save a JPG, it is compressed once more and loses a little. A PNG keeps every pixel, so repeated saves don't add new damage.
- The picture is a graphic, a logo, a chart or a screenshot with text. Flat colors and hard edges stay clean in PNG, while JPG leaves a faint fuzz around them.
- You need transparency. JPG has none, and PNG does.
PNG does not help when the picture is a regular photo. A photo holds millions of slightly different colors, and PNG stores every one of them. The result can be five to ten times bigger than the JPG, with no visible improvement. Converting also can't bring back detail the JPG already threw away. It only stops further loss from now on.
This page watches for that. If a PNG comes out more than three times the size of its source, a tip appears with two choices: Convert to WebP instead, which makes a much smaller file, or Keep PNG. If a smaller photo file is the real goal, going the other way with PNG to JPG is usually the answer.
Turn a white background transparent
A PNG can be see-through, but converting a JPG doesn't make it so. The white box around your logo comes along unchanged. This is a common surprise: PNG alone does not remove a background.
The Make a color transparent card does the extra step. Select Remove white background and every near-white pixel becomes clear while the PNG is made. The change applies immediately, and you can see the checkerboard in Compare.
JPG adds a complication, because it compresses with loss. A background that looks white is rarely pure white. Neighboring shades wobble slightly, especially close to dark lines. The Tolerance slider covers that. It runs from 0 to 50 and starts at 12. Raise it if flecks of off-white remain, and lower it if it starts eating into light parts of the artwork. For another background color, switch the card on and set the Color field yourself. Edges fade softly, which keeps outlines smooth.
The method fits flat artwork on a plain background. A portrait or product photo has too many shades for a single color to work. For those, the Background Remover finds the subject with an AI model that runs in your browser.
Other good reasons to make a PNG
Sometimes a program or a person you work with simply asks for a PNG, usually for a logo or an interface graphic. Lossless files are easy to hand over because they are exactly what you made.
Screenshots saved as JPG are another case. Small text looks blurry after JPG compression. Converting won't unblur it, but the PNG preserves the sharpness you have and keeps it that way during further edits.
Because PNG is lossless, the saved image matches what the converter received. Open Advanced settings (optional) to resize the picture at the same time, keep or remove the photo info, or pick Smaller file for artwork with few colors. The default lossless option also squeezes the file a little without touching a pixel.
Need a different format instead? The Image Converter can write JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF from the same screen.
Your images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded, so this is also a comfortable place to convert private documents and screenshots.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. A JPG has already lost some detail, and converting it to PNG cannot bring that back. What PNG does is keep every pixel from now on, so further edits and saves do not add new loss. The result looks the same as the JPG but is usually a bigger file.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail you are unlikely to notice. For a photo, that can make the PNG five to ten times larger. If you do not need PNG, accept the tip to convert to WebP instead, or save the photo as JPG.
Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
Not by itself. A white background in the JPG stays white in the PNG. To clear it, use Remove white background in the Make a color transparent card. It turns near-white pixels clear and fades the edges. Photos with busy backgrounds need the Background Remover.
How do I make a JPG logo transparent?
Add the logo, select Remove white background, and check the result in Compare. If light flecks remain around the artwork, raise Tolerance a little. If parts of the logo disappear, lower it. Then download the PNG and place it on any colored background without the white box.
When should I use PNG instead of JPG?
Use PNG for logos, graphics, screenshots with text, and anything that needs transparency or repeated editing. Use JPG for photographs where a small file matters. A photo as PNG is much larger without looking better, so the two formats suit different pictures.
Can I convert many JPG files to PNG at once?
Yes. Drop them all on the page and they convert together with the same settings. Download all (ZIP) saves the PNGs in one archive. If a single image needs a different treatment, such as clearing its background, change the settings from its own row.
Do you upload my JPG files?
No. The conversion happens inside your browser, and your files are never uploaded to any server. You do not need an account, and the PNG has no watermark. The images disappear from the page when you close it, so nothing is left behind on your device either.
